Architectural Concept:
Mersin was a grid planned harbour city in the 19th century but like many other cities in Turkey, it uncontrollably and poorly grew up in despite to its beautiful climate and geography.
Today its building density is continuously increasing and city morphology is over loaded without identity. In 1938th Hermann Jansen’s plan of the city, the grid central plan was sustained and Camillo Sitte’s garden city approach was adopted.
The competition for Mersin City’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry Building (MCCI) and Its Surrounding was seen as an opportunity to revive the lost qualities of the city in our proposal. The project is aimed to form a local focus which both reflects the institutional identity of MCCI and also regenerates the identical urban characteristics to set pattern for the growing city. Therefore, city’s historical, geographical, climatic and social data were mapped. Accordingly;
- A grid plan is proposed in the project area rooting from city’s original character.
-The site is divided into programmatic functions to articulate the site with different heights in order to gain an approach for the city in terms of texture and scale.
-Courtyard model of the old city for climatic reasons are modernized.
